    Professor Vassilios G. Agelidis has been invited to give a keynote address at the Energy Futures in Regional Australia, a National Conference updating Regional Leaders on the Social, Economic and Environmental Issues for Creating a Sustainable Future.

  • Inauguration of the new Systems Laboratory

    New Systems LabThe School has inaugurated a new $0.25 million Systems Laboratory for teaching Electrical and Information Engineering. The new Laboratory is modeled on the CDIO approach to Engineering Education, which was initiated by MIT. The new and innovative learning laboratory is focused on Active Learning. It enables a variety of learning modes, and facilitates them with flexible spaces that also enhance interactive and group learning. The new integrated learning space is a pioneering Laboratory - one of the first of its kind in the University.

    Prof V Agelidiswill be held on Wednesday, 26 November 2008, at Engineers Australia Harricks Auditorium, Ground Floor, 8 Thomas St, Chatswood. The subject "Nuclear Education" will allow the speaker, Professor Vassilios G. Agelidis, EnergyAustralia Chair of Power Engineering, to open the subject further to embrace broader aspects of power generation.

    ARC awardeesOur School has done superlatively this year in this Australian Research Council (ARC) National Competitive Grants Program. The School has been awarded $2 million for 6 projects. It is a record performance for our School.

  • 2008 Research Conversazione

    research conversazioneThe 2008 Research Conversazione was held from 12.30 on Friday 31 October. The Conversazione enables 4th year and postgraduate students to showcase their research with a poster display for industry, academic staff and peers. Industry sponsored awards were presented in several categories from the discipline-based of both 4th year and postgraduate projects to the more general awards for 'addressing society's needs" or "potential for commercialisation".   • New Institutes and Programs[22 September 2008]

    New InstitutesThe School is strongly represented in two new Institutes:

    (i) The Institute for Sustainable Solutions is a new multi-disciplinary Institute, and the School participates through the involvement of Vassilios Agelidis and the Power Engineering research.
    (ii) The Institute of Photonics and Optical Science (IPOS) is a new multi-disciplinary Institute, and the School participates through the involvement of Robert Minasian and the Fibre-optics and Photonics research. A new Master of Photonics and Optical Science has been launched in the Institute. This Masters program includes ELEC5511 Optical Communication Systems as a core course, and will bring additional EFTSU funding into EIE.

Agelidis, EnergyAustralia Chair of Power Engineering has received significant financial support exceeding $3M from private donors, industry and the University of Sydney towards realising TECHLAND™; a unique combination of a professional engineering environment and curriculum integrating advanced methods of teaching and learning activities that resemble professional industrial practices. One of the fundamental aspects of TECHLAND™ is that it requires considerable input from industry at every step. We are very fortunate at the University of Sydney to have many industrial partners supporting such vision. The School of Electrical and Information Engineering cordially invites you to its Inauguration of the new Systems Laboratory with the official launch by the Professor Gregory Hancock, Dean, and Professor Robert Minasian, Head. We are celebrating the opening of this new laboratory focused on Integrated Learning and modelled on CDIO principles for interactive and group work, which is one of the first of its kind in the university. Please join us for a celebratory morning tea.

7 - 12 December 2008 Honeywell Summer School
The Honeywell Summer School will be held from 7 - 12 December 2008. HESS brings together 100 students from across NSW and the ACT who are about to enter Year 12 (in 2009) and have expressed in interest in engineering. Students will be with the School of Electrical and Information Engineering on the morning of Monday 8 December. Several hands-on and interactive activities are scheduled to give an overview of the enjoyment and challenge of engineering.
