Centre of Excellence in Power Engineering

Director: Prof Vassilios G Agelidis

The Centre of Excellence in Power Engineering performs research work towards finding:

  • innovative and economical means to operate electricity infrastructure;
  • advanced electronic control of electricity grids using utility power electronics;
  • electrical energy storage and generation with sustainable energy sources;
  • direct current microgrids and high-voltage direct-current power transmissions topologies and control;
  • increased efficiency of delivery and quality of electrical power and new technologies to deliver the intelligent grid of the future.

Introducing the Centre of Excellence in Power Engineering at the University of Sydney

We are one of Australia’s leading research centres in power engineering, intelligent grid technologies and sustainable energy systems.

We are seeking high caliber individuals from around the globe to join our research team and contribute to our continuous search of excellence.

Our research facilities and industrial training systems are among the Nation’s finest.

Our state-of-the-art Sir William Tyree Laboratory in Power Engineering has positioned us at the forefront of undergraduate student learning and engagement in engineering through access to actual industrial systems during the undergraduate studies program. Our integrated laboratory-supported professional environment offers eight TECHLAND studios offer a unique opportunity for collaborative learning and interaction within student groups and system-based experimentation.

Our ABB Technology Centre bridges for the first time in Australia the space of industrial training and undergraduate student education since it provides the latest industrial equipment that is the envy of the world, right here in our new power engineering facility. We have access to IEC 61850 Substation Automation equipment that incorporates microSCADA and advanced digital relays; a truly unique piece of infrastructure in Australia. Our own robotic arm provides excitement and allows our students to dream and learn by playing with actual equipment and automation systems.

Our strong relationships with key industrial organizations such as EnergyAustralia, ABB and AEMO ensure the relevance of our research effort.

We enjoy industrial support and cooperation for education, research and training which leads university-industry relations in Power Engineering in Australia. Our students interact directly with all major industrial organisations in this country and internationally in the area of Power Engineering.

We are key partners in the EnergyAustralia Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Electricity Networks, an EnergyAustralia.initiative of $10 million dollars that involves both The University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle.

All our research students work on cutting edge research projects and deliver solutions with a high impact and internationally recognized importance.

The University of Sydney is amongst the finest in the world and Australia's first University.

Sydney’s world-class reputation as one of the most livable cities and our strong international network and partnerships with other world leading research organizations expand the horizons of our team members and open doors linked to outstanding career opportunities.

If you aim and want to make a real difference, join our team and help push our knowledge boundaries even further to make a greater impact.
